X-rays are a safe way for us to figure out the cause of your pet’s internal problems and create a list of potential causes. They are also a great way to examine bones, organs, tissues and foreign objects to rule out potential issues or pinpoint the best course of treatment. They might also be a part of your pet’s wellness exam so our team can identify potential problems before they become more serious.

Why might my veterinarian recommend an X-ray?

X-rays provide our veterinarians with valuable insights about your pet’s bones, gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, heart, and genitourinary system (bladder, prostate). An X-ray might be accompanied by other diagnostic tools that help us have a better picture of your pet’s internal health.

How do you take a pet X-ray?

X-rays usually take around 10 minutes. Your pet has to be extremely still while we take an X-ray. For our veterinarian to interpret it, the image needs to be as clear as possible. To avoid blurry images, your pet might need to be sedated or put under general anesthesia that wears off quickly. We use digital radiology which captures X-rays digitally instead of on film. This allows us to diagnose your pet quickly as well as use less radiation than traditional X-rays.
